Mission

The mission of the Residential Division is to provide a home away from home for visually impaired students that meets their recreational, health, social, and personal care needs and allows them to achieve potential independence.

The Residential Division administers a wide variety of programs that fall into the category of after school activities. The activities and programs are administered under the following priorities: student services, parental accommodations, and employee support.

Campus Life

Education does not stop when the students leave the classroom. Considerable learning takes place under the direction of residential advisors, home living skills instructors, and specialists. These people continue the student's education by providing life experiences in a home-like atmosphere. Meal preparation and personal grooming are but two examples of daily living skills that are reinforced in the dormitories. Study hall, remediation, piano, and instrumental music are also apart of our dormitory program.

Health Services

The Infirmary consists of four beds in the girls' ward and three beds in the boys' ward, three tubs and showers as well as a kitchenette.  A television is available in each ward.  Our medical team is comprised of registered nurse that is available 24 hours a day, combined with licensed practical nurses that staff the infirmary 24 hours a day to assess/administer health care and tend to emergencies by providing first aid, as well as to administer prescribed medications and treatments.  The infirmary is under the direction of a medical doctor.  Students may also be seen by an ophthalmologist and other specialized physicians.  Should a student become ill or contagious, parents are called and the student is sent home.  In the event of medical emergency, students will be transported to the closest emergency room for treatment and/or care.

After School Activities

It is the goal of the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired to produce students who are well rounded.  Since most of the children are residential students for four or five nights per week, LSVI offers an after school program to help accomplish this goal.  The after school program includes study time/tutoring assistance, fitness activities, outings to the community, cultural/educational enhancement activities, and recreational opportunities.

The afternoon program gives the children an opportunity to try gardening, art, music, or living skills.  There is also a tutoring/study time session called Reaching for the graded students that meets Monday - Thursday.

The evening session, for most students, includes one trip out into the community for an activity, event, or shopping experience each week.  Other evenings are filled with explorations of issues related to character, exercise/fitness activities, or the fun-filled living skills class called Needles and Noodles.  At least one evening per week is set aside for dormitory activities or an opportunity to just hang out with friends.

While, it might not be quite the same as being at home, the school strives to provide a caring, fun, and supportive environment.  With these goals in mind, the LSVI after school program provides students with a wide variety of experiences to enhance their educational goals, to encourage social interaction, to enrich their daily lives, and to promote a healthy lifestyle.
