LSVI based O&M Instruction

Through the LSVI O&M instructional program, students skill levels are assessed by a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist.  Skill deficits are identified and used to develop and implement an individualized O&M instructional program.  Depending on age, maturity, and skill levels, students at LSVI are engaged in a variety of O&M experiences that are geared for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced traveler.  O&M sessions may include functional concept skills, basic O&M skills, advanced O&M skills, basic route travel, advanced route travel, community based travel, street crossing skills, use of public transportation, and route completion accuracy.

Camp Programs       Camp Information

School year weekend camps and summer week long camps are available to all Louisiana VI/blind students.  In addition to O&M skills, camps programs address deficits in Braille skills, technology, keyboarding, living skills, recreation, leisure skills, and personal hygiene and grooming.  Camp recreational activities, depending on availability and weather conditions, may include bowling, tandem bicycling, movies, SCUBA diving, skating, rock wall climbing, Blue Bayou Water Park, AMTRAK train trips, shopping opportunities, horseback riding and more.

Outreach Services

Outreach Services works in cooperation with parish school systems to identify, assess, and, if necessary, develop and implement individualized programs for their respective students.  Outreach services, when requested, conducts workshops and in-service programs that address VI related issues and topics which are relevant to faculty, staff, and parents of VI students.  These programs are conducted at both parish designated sites and LSVI locations.

Special Activities

LSVI, in conjunction with the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, organizes a ski trip for VI/blind students sometime during the winter months.  SCUBA diving certification through a local dive shop and water skiing through a local facility are in the planning stages.
